In Sonic Origins, players can play Sonic classics with remastered versions of the original titles, coupled with the ability to play multiplayer. Sonic Origins is a multi-game collection that brings together the 2D Sonic titles from the Sega Genesis: Sonic the Hedgehog 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD. There's still no word on bringing back some classic Sonic 3D titles, though. Fans of the classics will love the remastered versions that Sega helped redevelop, as well as new features, content, modes, and more. In addition, players can join with friends in local co-op; at this time, there is no online play supported for these retro comebacks. Sonic Origins has a variety of ways to experience the four titles compiled into a $40 package. First, they can play Classic Mode, which puts the screen resolution at 4:3, as they first appeared on the Sega Genesis. Then, after beating the game, players can try Mirror Mode, which reverses the stage and has Sonic run from right to left. There is also Anniversary Mode, which gives players unlimited lives and a revamped, full-screen resolution. Adding to this are missions to get coins, unlockable content, challenges, and special stages in Sonic Origins. Sonic Origins allows for multiplayer co-op on two of the four titles: Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles. The original Sonic 2 allowed a local co-op for two players; one was Sonic, and the other joined in as Tails. Sonic 3 & Knuckles had a similar dynamic where one person could be Sonic, and the other person could be Tails or Knuckles. True to the original titles, Sonic Origins offers players local co-op as the only multiplayer option for both Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles; as of now, there are no plans to make Sonic Origins or even the next planned title for 2022, Sonic Frontiers, an online multiplayer game. How to Play Sonic Origins With Friends To set up a multiplayer game of Sonic Origins, ensure the second controller is connected and specify playing 2-player. The original game, and its remastered version in Sonic Origins, is set up so that Sonic is the only consequential character. If the second player dies as Tails, he comes back to life. Tails and the second player can collect rings, kill enemies, and fly around behind Sonic. If Sonic dies; however, both characters die. Sonic 2 and, Sonic 3 & Knuckles have a competitive mode where players can race against each other instead of playing cooperatively. This only works for two players in a local co-op. Each player can race through a series of levels, and whoever gets the fastest time wins the competition, which works well with the fanbase's tendency to compare the Sonic characters' power. This dedicated second multiplayer mode was added to Sonic Origins to fill up the game with new content. It's worth pointing out that none of the multiplayer modes can be played online, so rankings and completion times are only locally based.

That was the Playstation version though…and technically, this review is based of the PC version and centralized on the Sonic Origins Plus Expansion.So yeah…this is new content.I don’t mind in the least though because if you’ve read my review (which I’ve helpfully linked above), you know that I loved Sonic Origins! More of that can’t be a bad thing, right?!So without further ado, here’s the review!What is Sonic Origins Plus?Sonic Origins Plus is the enhanced version of Sonic Origins, which was released last year on the PC, Playstation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch consoles. It’s a collection of classic 5 Sonic games, with the Plus Expansion adding in 12 new Game Gear titles.The game is developed and published by SEGA, who also awesomely provided us with the STEAM code! Thanks so much!Since I’ve already reviewed the original game, I won’t be retreading familiar ground. You can just head on up to the link earlier if you want to find out what I thought of the original.For those with Sonic Origins already, the Plus Expansion is just a measly SG$14.40 on Steam. For that amount, you get 12 Game Gear games, Amy playable in the classic games included in Sonic Origins and the Classic Music and Premium Fun packs, which were previously paid DLC for Sonic Origins.If this is your first foray into the game, then Sonic Origins Plus is a damn good deal. It’s basically everything in one neat package For a little over the original asking price. That’s fantastic!However, things are considerably less rosy if you’re an early adopter who bought the premium edition of Sonic Origins. These guys sadly get screwed by losing out on the DLC (since it’s already bundled in with the Plus Expansion) AND paying the same amount for the Plus Expansion while technically getting less content, since they already have the DLC.From a purely objective point of view, the Sonic Origins Plus Expansion is undoubtedly good value. Don’t expect straight ports of these Sega classics, though. In addition to remastered visuals updated for today’s consoles, Sonic Origins includes new achievements, collectibles, animated shorts, and game modes, putting a fresh pair of sneakers on these old classics. In Sonic Origins, players will be able to choose between playing in classic mode or anniversary mode. In classic mode, players will experience the games in all their original glory and original aspect ratios. Anniversary mode offers a full-screen experience along with infinite lives so you won’t have to worry about getting repeatedly crushed to death in Chemical Plant Zone (you know the place.)Sonic Origins lets you play as Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles throughout all four games giving you the opportunity to beat Metal Sonic as Knuckles or fly through Green Hill Zone as Tails. While Sega has given fans umpteen bundles of the first three Sonic games, Sonic CD hasn’t seen a proper re-release since 2011. No word yet on if this version of the game will feature the US or (the vastly superior) Japanese version of its soundtrack. Judge for yourself.You can preorder the game here, but it seems like Sega has decided to make this process as confusing as possible. Sega, Sonic fans have proven we will open our wallets for anything, don’t make this harder than it has to be.While it’ll likely be some time yet before we see gameplay for Sonic Frontiers, Sonic Origins is perfectly suited to occupy fans until then.Sonic Origins launches on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and PC on June 23rd.
