Make it a rule to substitute a word for a phrase – and be sure that word is necessary. In “Through the Looking Glass,â€ I changed “You and I see the same movieâ€ to “We see the same movie.â€ I cut the sentence “We may choose not to believe it all we wish; we might even start a movement arguing that Dodgson’s pseudonym was Louis XIVâ€ in two places. First, I dropped all we wish because it is empty and clichéd. Second, I used the substitution rule to replace start a movement arguing with campaign. The result: “We may choose not to believe it; we might even campaign that Dodgson’s pseudonym was Louis XIV.â€ Stronger, yes?Targeting and removing excess is an essential revision activity – but worrying about it as you compose can choke the flow of thoughts. Because we are used to speaking, seeing, and writing excess, it usually takes multiple passes to notice and cut the fat in a manuscript. These passes are best done over several days, so each scan feels fresh. If you can set the manuscript aside for a month, all the better. You will naturally become sensitized to some of these problems over time and commit fewer of them. But every manuscript needs careful combing. A whole sob story about Noel and how he was going to kill her just like he killed Sara Harvey, but that she’d gone along with his plan and said all those things at the scary house because (a) she was worried about her life, and (b) he told her Charlotte left her money for another eye surgery. Spencer doesn’t buy any of it, but Marco interrupts Spencer’s retort to send Jenna to a conference room. When she’s gone, he tells Spencer they don’t have enough on Jenna to charge her… unless there’s something Spencer isn’t telling him. Oh boy, where do we start? Spencer talks to Aria afterward (she tells her Jenna “has balls the size of church bells” — uh, ew?) and says it was hard not to tell Marco about the game, and that one of the reasons she wants to find Mary Drake now is to forgive her. When she goes home again to Veronica — whom she clearly still hasn’t forgiven — Veronica says they’re selling the house, and Spencer doesn’t seem to care. It doesn’t feel like her home anymore, she says. Veronica gets upset and makes a speech about how it’s where they lived as a family, a family she “tried to hold together through all the crap life threw at me.” Veronica, wake up!! “Life” didn’t throw that crap at you! Your gross, cheating husband is literally the only person to blame! Meanwhile, Jenna has been making appearances all over town. Emily sees her over at the Brew “with bookends” — a.k.a. a posse of two other blind people. What? Then the Three Blind Mice show up at the Radley — and Hanna notices Jenna is wearing an exact copy of the dress she designed, but in white instead of black. Immediately she and Mona storm up and ask where she got it (she doesn’t answer, obviously). They blame ‘A’ but don’t think of another pretty clear source: Hanna’s evil boss, who had seen the dress in detail before and definitely has the resources to copy it. Not saying there isn’t an. Right hand is a hook and he openly jokes about it. The Man in the Window develops these four characters with such living force, I felt I knew them, that they were my neighbors. The hospital scenes with Iris are so realistic I wondered how the author knew so much about medicine. But then I learned that Jon Cohen was at one time a critical care nurse. When Louis falls out of his second-story bedroom window, he and Iris are brought together. And then, along the way, their parents meet. The Man in the Window is a marvelous, well developed, heart-rending love story. I loved it so much I dreaded reaching the end.573 reviews26 followersMay 1, 2014As a healthcare worker, understanding ER and ICU and how nurses deal with things, I enjoyed a majority of this book based on the merit he has for telling the inner workings of a hospital correctly instead of just turning it into Grey's Anatomy Hollywood trickery. Even with little touches of secret healthcare lingo (Code Brown and The Fifth Floor for example), he really turns this into a shining example of an authentic retelling of hospital life. For this part, he had my attention. I have always been drawn to stories of recluses, hermits, those with a shameful past or a disfigurement. The half that is not authentic hospital action is about a man, Louis, who hasn't left the house for sixteen years. He wears a scarf over his face so that no one can see him, and he watches the world pass by his window. He is the neighborhood curiosity, and the whole scenario reminds me of "To Kill a Mockingbird," particularly the Boo Radley parts. Considering Boo Radley is one of my favorite literary characters and hospital work is my passion, this book really is literary gold. Cohen uses large metaphors about faith and the afterlife throughout and there is really nothing bad that I can say about this, except it's a little sappy in parts. Overlooking this, "The Man in the Window" could be the perfect book for me. 442 reviews1

Directed by Radley MetzgerStarring Lynn Lowry, Casey Donovan, Claire Wilbur, Gerard GrantRelease Date: April 16, 1974 90 Minutes/ColorIn the early 1970’s, having “sexual hang ups” was severely frowned upon by anyone who was truly “with it.” Thus began the era of bisexual chic. The vogue was short-lived, so short that few films had the opportunity to capitalize on the fad. This is what makes SCORE such a unique and enjoyable experience. In the modern era, when bisexual adult films are widely perceived to be uniformly terrible, SCORE entices us with a glimpse at a genre that could have been but sadly never was.Our story finds us in a quaint seaside town, in a country vaguely European, where married swingers Elvira and Jack live a joyously hedonistic life seducing tourists. Two new acquaintances, naive young marrieds Betsy and Eddie, are proving to be difficult nuts to crack, however. Undeterred, Elvira and Jack make a bet: can husband bed husband before wife can seduce wife? And what will a swarthy telephone repairman bring to the mix? While still in the early stages of his career, director Radley Metzger had already begun to solidify his reputation as a master of arthouse erotica by 1974. His meticulously cast, wittily-scripted films were head and shoulders above those of his more exploitative contemporaries. It is in the film’s casting that SCORE first approaches masterpiece territory. Claire Wilbur, who had appeared in the stage play upon which the film is based, quite expertly dials down to a pitch suited to the more cozy confines of film. She plays the coy, joyfully manipulative Elvira with a wink and a nod, seemingly daring the audience not to like her despite the characters unsavory seduction techniques.Gerald Grant, as the Devil-may-care husband, brings to the role a wry smile, a twinkling eye, and an effortless sexuality that is simply irresistible on screen.Of the leads, Calvin Culver is perhaps the best known of the bunch. He had earlier shot to icon status under the “nom-de-porn” Casey Donovan in Wakefield Poole’s gay opus BOYS IN THE SAND (1971). Culver plays the wide-eyed but repressed Eddie with such deft skill, it is quite obvious he has met such sticks-in-the-mud many times before. While SCORE is very much an ensemble piece, the entire film pivots on the performance of the immensely watchable Lynn Lowry. An actress of great depth, her transformation from “Betsy the blushing Catholic schoolgirl” to “Betsy the liberated, sexual explorer” is effortless. It’s not just in her delivery of dialogue that we see the change, her eyes themselves take on a knowing new light. It’s an astonishing performance.Rounding out the cast is Carl Parker as Mike, the telephone repairman. Parker is given little to do besides look sexy, but this he does exceedingly well. Metzger would later use Parker to great effect in the S&M themed THE IMAGE.Metzger (as Henry Paris) would go on to become one of the most respected and creative auteurs of hardcore erotica, helming such classics as THE PRIVATE AFTERNOONS OF

Be a nickname for “Addison” — but it would be ridiculous and a huge cop-out for A.D. to be a new face… plus Addison was probably like 7 years old when the first A stuff started happening.) RELATED: Pretty Little Liars Cast Reveals Which Characters They’d Target as “A” Meanwhile, Mona checks in with Hanna about dressing the senator’s daughter. Apparently Mona pulled some unapproved stuff from Hanna’s closet, and the girl has her eye on a black high-neck tutu dress that is OFF LIMITS, according to Hanna. Turns out it’s because her old fashion boss, Claudia, had ripped it to shreds (verbally), and Hanna’s insecure about it. Mona tries to convince her it’s fine by saying, “No masterpiece is ever complete. If someone hadn’t pulled the Mona Lisa off Da Vinci’s easel he would have given her a perm.” It’s so stupid it’s kind of brilliant. (I feel like there’s a Mona/Mona joke here that isn’t coming. Someone else make one.) Later, Caleb tries to convince her it’s fine, too, but Hanna is stuck on the issue. Spencer, understandably, is still stuck on her own issue — the whole “being Mary Drake’s kid” thing. Veronica Hastings keeps trying to smooth everything over, but Spencer isn’t ready for that. She’s focused on the dark irony of her checking into Radley as a patient years ago not knowing it was the place she was born. One silver lining: At least Melissa was also in the dark about Spencer’s true parentage. Later, Spencer gets a visit from Hot Detective Marco Furey (he wears a tank top: “I didn’t come here as a police officer. I thought the shorts would have been a giveaway”), and she shows him the letter from Mary Drake. He agrees to make finding her a priority. Stupid Addison is arranging her priorities, too: She spies on Ali and Emily, and, in true Baby A fashion, takes photos of their more-than-friendly interaction (no smooching, just hair-smoothing). Of all people, Addison takes this information to Paige… and adds a little flair of her own. She tells Paige Emily has been
