Rainfall or high summer temperatures.(3)But make no mistake.Bumblebees don’t make nearly as much honey as honeybees do. They typically make no more than a few tablespoons per hive. Why?Because bumblebees live in much smaller colonies of about 50-500 bumblebees. On the other hand, honeybees can have colonies as large as 60,000 bees.(4)Plus, bumblebee colonies don’t survive the winter like honeybees do. Instead, only the queen bumblebee survives because she hibernates. And during hibernation, the queen bumblebee is neither eating nor working. With that in mind, other social bees that make honey are:Australian Sugarbag BeesMelipona BeesVulture beesBut remember:There are more than 20,000 types of bees. Well-known species include honeybees, bumblebees, carpenter bees, and mason bees. And due to the sheer amount of bee species, scientists haven’t studied them all. So we have tons of research on popular bees like honeybees and bumblebees, but much less research on sweat bees or vulture bees. With that in mind, the question becomes:What Type of Bee Doesn’t Make Honey?Confession time:Over 90% of bee species don’t make honey. This is because most bee species are solitary bees that don’t live in hives. Common examples of solitary bees are carpenter bees, mason bees, and sweat bees. And let’s face it:Making honey takes a lot of time and effort. A single honeybee only produces 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey in her lifetime. So how do honeybee colonies make up to 100 pounds of honey per year?Simple. They have a strong hive with up to 60,000 honeybees in it.So to put it simply?Solitary bees don’t have the extra hands needed to produce that amount of honey. They’re busy fending for themselves by building their own nests and gathering their own food. Now let me bust a common myth:Solitary bees aren’t simply bees who have left their colony and now live alone.Solitary bees are born to be

Father. On it was much curious work, wonderful to see; for of the many creatures which the land and sea rear up, he put most upon it, wonderful things, like living beings with voices : and great beauty shone out from it. But when he had made the beautiful evil to be the price for the blessing, he brought her out, delighting in the finery which the bright-eyed daughter of a mighty father had given her, to the place where the other gods and men were. And wonder took hold of the deathless gods and mortal men when they saw that which was sheer guile, not to be withstood by men. For from her is the race of women and female kind: of her is the deadly race and tribe of women who live amongst mortal men to their great trouble, no helpmeets in hateful poverty, but only in wealth. And as in thatched hives bees feed the drones whose nature is to do mischief--by day and throughout the day until the sun goes down the bees are busy and lay the white combs, while the drones stay at home in the covered hives and reap the toil of others into their own bellies--even so Zeus who thunders on high made women to be an evil to mortal men, with a nature to do evil. And he gave them a second evil to be the price for the good they had: whoever avoids marriage and the sorrows that women cause, and will not wed, reaches deadly old age without anyone to tend his years, and though he at least has no lack of livelihood while he lives, yet, when he is dead, his kinsfolk divide his possessions amongst them. And as for the man who chooses the lot of marriage

2020-July-09 Did you know? You can share this story using the social media icons on the upper left. Use the hashtag #WeAreCisco. You can also rate or comment on the story below. July 10 is Don’t Step on A Bee Day. It serves as an important reminder that the fate of the common bee lies in the balance. With bee numbers in some countries having halved in the past decade with no apparent cause, we must maintain bee populations, pollination, and honey production. Globally, there are more honeybees than other types of bee and pollinating insects. Bees have become the world’s most important pollinator of food crops. It’s estimated that one-third of the food that we consume each day relies on pollination. Thanks to bees, we enjoy a range of foods from apples and pears to coffee and vanilla. And if you are wearing cotton, that's because the cotton plant your threads came from was pollinated. How I Got the Bee Buzz Growing up in a family with a deep passion for healthy living and organic gardening, I value nature and working with nature. Cecile kitted out in her protective beekeeping gear. When I moved from Germany to North Carolina in 2012, I saw a huge opportunity to create a haven for pollinators — in my own backyard and also on the Cisco RTP campus. I partnered with Workplace Resources and the Green Team. Together, with the help of different corporate teams, including Corporate Social Responsibility, Employee Risk, and Legal, we set the goal to install three beehives on campus. We worked with Bee Downtown, which installs and maintains beehives on corporate campuses in urban areas to help rebuild healthy honey bee populations. Not only do they track the bee population but they also monitor bees’ health and honey production throughout the year. What Is Cisco Doing to Help? Cecile with the RTP hives. Cisco has been a longtime supporter of conservation efforts worldwide. In 2018, we set an ambitious goal for our RTP campus to achieve 100 percent renewable energy, water neutrality, and zero waste. While our beehives’ official April launch was delayed due to social distancing protocols, the Cisco bees are busy pollinating. Our RTP bee community has grown from 35 to more than 400 bees. How You Can Help Stop the Decline in Bees Don’t step on a bee! (Of course.) Support your local beekeeper by buying local honey. Sign up to count bees for the Global Pollinator Map, which helps create a database of global pollinators. Build a bee hotel! Did you know that bees need to rest when on pollen missions? Our RTP employees share our passion, so we’re working on employee engagement activities, like
