SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - Emergency cold weather shelters could open next week.For Tim Michaels and Vicki McCombs, having access to cold weather shelters is more than a bed and a meal; it is often the difference between life and death.“There’s people out here every year that ended up freezing to death,” said Michaels. “They’re lifesaving,” said McCombs.Michaels has spent years navigating the brutal winters, often with no shelter to turn to. At one point, his struggle to survive in the cold became a matter of survival.“When I had my dog, there were no police shelters for dogs,” said Michaels. “I could not take my dog with me, so I stayed out here with my dog. I did wonder if I am going to have to go to the hospital, to the emergency room, before my feet freeze.”For many, these shelters offer more than just a place to sleep but also a sense of safety.”The times I’ve been out here, it’s been frightening. It’s been so scary, especially being a woman out here. It’s dangerous. It’s if you’re on the streets, you got to sleep with one eye open because you don’t know what’s going to happen,” McCombs explained.Right now, leaders with Community Partnership of the Ozarks say they have enough volunteers to open shelters if needed, but this could change as the winter cold begins to seep in.“Each and every single year, it seems like we need more and more of those,” said Emily Fessler with the Community Partnership of the Ozarks. “Last year, it took an average of 39 volunteers per night to even open the shelters... things come up. People get sick. You know, life events occur, and so always having volunteers on standby is so important.“City Utilities will offer free transportation to cold-weather shelters. An amazing stretch of springtime warmth begins today, with many places hitting 80° for the first time. Many areas should top 80° under sunny skies.(KY3)The atmosphere remains quite dry overall, so once again we will see full sunshine. Surface dew points look to rise into the 40s, putting us just outside the threshold of a red flag warning. Still, I would recommend against burning. An upper low will approach the area late Wednesday, bringing with it some moisture and instability aloft. This could mean a few showers or storms Wednesday night, primarily over Arkansas and far southern Missouri. The first of two upper lows will move across Arkansas Wednesday night, and a few storms are expected.(KY3)A little bit of small hail can’t be ruled out, but no severe weather is expected this far north. Temperatures should remain in the upper 70s Wednesday and Thursday, and we may reach 80 again on Friday. The outlook for Friday remains unchanged at this point, with surface moisture and instability expected to be marginal for any thunderstorms over the western half of the Ozarks. This will likely shift the main severe weather threat east of Highway 65.(KY3)Scattered storms will likely erupt east of Highway 65, in my opinion, and severe weather certainly looks possible. The best chance of storms will be east of Highway 65.(KY3)The eastern Ozarks will have the highest chance of severe storms.(KY3)However, this could be a dry system for many of us. SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - HVAC and plumbing businesses in Springfield are working around the clock fixing broken and frozen pipes and repairing heating units.“With the cold weather, it’s been very busy here,” said J.W. DeLong with DeLong Plumbing Heating & Air. “We’ve had a lot of frozen pipe calls, a lot of broken pipe calls, as well as a lot of ‘the heats out’ kind of thing.”On Thursday, his crews worked on frozen pipes at The Wok on West Bypass in Springfield. Its pipes are located on the exterior of the building.“That room gets very hot in the summer and very cold in the winter. This is our first year being open (on West Bypass), so we’re just learning all the little (building) quirks,” said The Wok Owner Leeann Tran.Tran even closed up shop on Thursday due to the pipe situation.“We had the heat on just like you’re supposed to do, kept the water dripping, but unfortunately, our pipes are on the outside of the building in a closet, and we actually have a heated fan in there as well, and it still didn’t prevent it,” Tran said.“It’s really been 3-4 guys on a nonstop basis on the plumbing side and 2-3 guys on the HVAC side,” DeLong said.Leave your faucets dripping and open your cabinets to let warm air in. Good Saturday morning! We’ll start off on a sunny note in the morning before an approaching cold front brings some changes. Clouds will increase through the afternoon and evening, though we’ll stay dry until after dark. High temperatures should still reach the upper 60s to low 70s with breezy winds from the southeast. Cloud cover increasing(maxuser | ky3)The front pushes in tonight with a little bit of instability and wind shear present. The Storm Prediction Center has outlined a level one severe risk tonight with the greatest threat being damaging winds and hail. I don’t think many of us will receive severe weather, though it will be kicking up in the late hours into the overnight so don’t be surprised if thunder wakes you up. Hail and high winds are the main concern(maxuser | ky3)Not everyone will get rain(maxuser | ky3)Sunday will feature a few lingering showers/thunderstorms and clouds as the front lingers. I think the activity will be widely scattered to isolated at best, but it will feel a little cooler. Winds will be out of the northwest and breezy. Highs will track into the 60s and possibly the lower 70s in Arkansas with cloud cover decreasing through the day. Temperatures above average(maxuser | ky3)Sunnier skies are forecast for the workweek with temperatures above average. I have us in the upper 60s to low 70s for basically the entire week, but there are a few things to keep an eye on. Overall conditions remain extremely dry, and while the winds won’t be screaming as much, I still wouldn’t burn anything. Not a whole lot of rain expected(maxuser | ky3)Our next cold front pushes in Thursday into Friday with a chance for showers and thunderstorms. There may be some instability working up to the west of highway 65 leading up to the storms, but I’m not sold on severe potential just yet. These stores sell overstock meals and baked goods at discounted rates.Jessica Browning, the general manager for Pizza Ranch in Springfield, says the discounted rate is better than wasting food and money.“Do something,” Browning said. “There’s no reason, and you know it even when you throw it in the trash, especially if you are someone who looks at those numbers.
